In August 2008 the Art Centre embarked on a new and exciting project to select, document and display their wide Art Collection of works from past students. Over 700 drawings, paintings, graphics, prints, and ceramics have been itemized and organized. Some works date as far back as the early 1980’s and include samples from students who are established and known designers, cultural workers and artists in our community. A selection from the SJC Art Collection will be on a rotation display at the Art Centre and in other areas of the campus.
The art galleries represent a sampling of art works by students in a variety of media. The works are mixed together from students of high school, the School of Liberal Arts (Junior College), School of Professional Studies, the Kolbe Foundation, EP Yorke High School and Sadie Vernon High School. These galleries reflect the wide range of subjects being offered at the Art Centre and is meant to promote and celebrate the art of our talented students.

Painting
Painting has been a dominant media in the Art Centre’s program of courses. In 2nd form students are introduced to the basics in color theory, and art appreciation by learning the styles and concepts of great artists. In 3rd and 4th forms students move into more traditional forms of painting from landscapes and seascapes to market scenes and still life in preparation for CXC exams. At the School of Liberal Arts (Junior College) painting is also an important part of the art program. The paintings featured on this site is only a small sample of the vast inventory of work that is produced on an annual basis at the Centre.
3D Design
At the School of Liberal Arts (Junior College) 3D design forms a significant part of the course offerings.. Students create three-dimensional artwork with a variety of material including found objects, plastic, metal, paper and fabric. Students are encouraged to explore and experiment with concepts of space and shape to create unique works.
Drawing
Drawing is considered the foundation of all visual arts because of its flexibility and range of possibilities. Students at the Art Centre are all exposed to a variety of drawing skills in the methods of pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, pastel and color pencils. It is via drawing that students conceptualize and develop their ideas. From the loose free sketches to the more advanced and complex value shading techniques the drawing process is always utilized to express the ideas and emotions of our students.
Pottery (Ceramics)
When the Art Centre was inaugurated in May 2001 the Embassy of the Republic of China – Taiwan was gracious in donating equipment for our 1st ever Pottery (Ceramics) studio. With support from professor of art Ken McMillian of the University of North Florida a brick Kiln was built to fire the works. The Pottery program is special to us at the Centre because we realize the unique opportunity our students have in accessing this kind of education. SJC students have done exceptionally well in Pottery at the CXC level.
Graphic Design
In September 2008 the School of Professional Studies (SPS) introduced a new program in the Graphic Arts that includes five core courses (a) Digital publishing, (b) digital imaging, (c) Basic Graphic design, (d) design Communication and (e) Introduction to Web design. These courses can be taken individually for interest and professional development or taken together toward a certification in Graphic Design.
