About Us
Mission Statement
The SJC Counselling Centre provides personal counselling services to full-time and part-time students. The Counselling Centre acknowledges and celebrates the strengths and fragility of the human spirit. We are committed to providing services which respect the dignity and value of all people inclusive of age, gender, ethnicity, physical qualities, and ability. These services include a wide variety of preventive, curative, psycho-educational and crisis management activities.
Our objectives are:
- To conduct confidential counselling sessions with students experiencing emotional or situational challenges.
- To provide crisis counselling and referrals to applicable community agencies.
- To conduct or arrange for group sessions and workshops on various mental health themes.
- To liaise/consult with the many student services and relevant departments in order to integrate services and better meet students needs.
- To act as a resource for those in the college community (faculty, staff, administration) in the best interest of a student's well being. To provide documentation of student distress (with student consent)to faculty and staff so that appropriate interventions and accommodations can be instituted.
- To maintain contact with community mental health professionals and service agencies to ensure and increase their commitment to providing service to SJC students.
- To maintain professional standing by participating in professional development and affiliation with relevant professional colleges and associations.
- To document information regarding a student in a timely, respectful, confidential and succinct manner.
