What is Counselling?

Counselling is a process that allows individuals the opportunity to gain a better understanding of themselves, including their pattern of thoughts, behaviours, feelings and the ways in which these may have been problematic in their lives. Counselling begins with the development of a relationship between a client and a counsellor and is centred on the client’s concerns and difficulties. It Is for normal people with normal problems. Clients also have the chance to examine how to tap into their existing resources, support systems or to create new ones that would improve their lives and their relationships. Counselling is a collaborative effort between Client and Counsellor on working to identify goals and attaining of said goals.

What can I expect when I come to see a counsellor?

In meeting with a counsellor, you can expect the counsellor to listen to your concerns, to help you expand your understanding of your concerns, and to assist you in identifying steps you can take to address these concerns. You can expect the counsellor to take your concern seriously and to be willing to discuss anything you want to discuss. While counsellors may have different styles and approaches, each will want to work cooperatively with you to address the concerns you present.

Is counselling confidential? Is it part of my academic record?

Counselling records are confidential and separate from academic records. In the rare instance where an individual may present a threat to harm him/herself or others counselling information may be divulged without the individual’s permission and then only to the extent necessary to protect the individual or other persons being threatened.

What kinds of concerns do students discuss with a counsellor?

Any personal issue can be discussed with a counsellor. Typical concerns include:

  • Stress or anxiety
  • Depression and/or suicidal thoughts
  • Interpersonal / social problems
  • Time Management
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Drug or alcohol use
  • Self confidence or identity issues
  • Death of a family member or close friend

What are the qualifications of the Counselling centre Staff?

Counselling Centre staff comprises of a Director and two Counsellors. The staff members are trained professional counsellors and receive yearly professional development.

How will counselling help me personally?

Counselling can result in students increasing their self-awareness, using new problem-solving skills, seeing new alternatives and perspectives, handling personal concerns more effectively.
