The Charles T. Hunter Commission
for Social Outreach

Do The Right Thing Campaign

The Police Department came up with the idea to annually award students who show that they are determined to live exemplary lives despite the negative influences in their surroundings. The rationale is that by recognizing and praising students for being positive role models, other young people will strive for the same recognition and praise. Nominations are taken from secondary schools all over the country on a monthly basis and then a committee comprised of representatives from the Police Department, SJC, and First Caribbean Bank select the top ten winners. Winners are awarded gifts such as T-shirts, computers, internet access, financial aid to help with books and tuition.

St. John's College through the Hunter Commission for Social Outreach partnered with the Police Department to award tuition and book scholarships to the top two students as determined by the selection committee to attend any of its Junior College Divisions provided that they meet the admissions criteria.

The winners of the scholarships are Erick Moreira from Julian Cho Technical High School in the Toledo District, and Justin Magaña from Chunox St. Viator Vocational High School in the Corozal District. Currently, Mr. Moreira is enrolled in the Teacher Education Program of the School of Professional Studies while Mr. Magaña is enrolled in the Humanities Program of the School of Liberal Arts.

Assistance is being sought from other Educational Institutions to provide additional scholarships to the winners of the Do the Right Thing Programme.

The Hunter Commission Women’s Scholarship

The Commission fully supports the work of the Women’s Department in empowering and educating women. As a result, the Hunter Commission, in collaboration with the Women’s Department has offered a tuition scholarship to a deserving female in order to pursue an associate degree at either of the tertiary divisions of St. John’s College.

The recipient of this tuition and book scholarship is Ms. Evelyn Richards.

Ms. Richards demonstrated that despite the many obstacles she faces, she is prepared to make sacrifices in order to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. She is presently enrolled in the Teacher Education Program of the School of Professional Studies and acknowledges gratitude for the opportunity to continue her studies. She admits that it is not easy having to juggle family life, as the mother of two young children, and school life but she is determined to make the most of the opportunity
