Why Serve

Service is an important component of the mission of St. John's College. It is embodied in the school motto: “Men and Women for Others”. Service is also embodied in our Catholic and Jesuit roots. Our Church teaches us to go out into the community to serve those who are less fortunate than we are and it is embodied in the action of Jesus when He washed the feet of his apostles on the eve of his death.

Just as Christ then, we are call upon to serve those in our community who may benefit from our efforts. There are many needs in our society that can only be met through the efforts of committed individuals and organizations. With more individuals involved in these efforts, the better the community becomes, the benefits of which accrue to all members of the society.

The invitation then is extended to all to participate in at least one service activity every year.

Who Serves

The service projects of the Hunter Commission are primarily designed to engage and involve students and employees of St. John's College.

However, the invitation is extended beyond the confines of the institution so that anybody who desires may get in touch with the Director either to design a new service project or to join in one of the existing projects.

Where to Serve

There are many opportunities for service in our community. There are organizations such as the Belize Red Cross and the Belize Council for the Visually Impaired (BCVI) which always welcome volunteers to assist them with their programs. There are also other agencies that cater to the elderly or to orphaned children. Additionally, most of the schools in the community welcome volunteers to assist them with tutoring and mentoring.

Furthermore, if anyone is interested in helping with the Hunter Commission projects, then they can contact the Director to indicate how they would like to serve.

How to Give

In addition to service, there are those who need financial assistance or assistance in kind. Should you like to be of service in this manner, then you can get in touch with the Director of the Hunter Commission who can receive your donation for the Commission’s projects or who can direct you to one of the organizations that can use the sort of assistance that you are willing to give.
