Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an ID to use the Library?

Yes, an ID must be worn at all times in the library as well as inorder to used the computer lab and check out books.

Can I use my cell phone in the library?

No. We ask out of consideration of others, that all cell phones be turned off and not used in the library. If they are used they may be taken to be returned at a time the staff member sees fit.

Why is there no talking in the library?

The library is a place for quiet and serious study. Talking is permitted if it is quiet and relates to classes. Socializing should be done in some other area of the campus.

Can I use my Ipod/MP3 players in the library?

Yes, Ipod's/ MP3 are allowed provided you alone can hear it. If it is too loud, you will be asked to turn it down. If you need to be asked a second time, a staff member will take your Ipod/MP3. It will be given back as the staff member sees fit.

Can I bring my bag into the library?

Yes, you are allowed take your bags into the library, however there are racks in the front where you can leave your bag if you wish too.  If you do leave your bag we advise you take all valuables (cell phone, wallets, purses, cameras, Laptops ect.) along with you for the library staff will not be held responsible if these items go missing.

What are the library hours?

During the regular academic year the library is open from 7:30 am – 7:30 pm,
Monday and Tuesday, 7:30 am – 7:00 pm on Wednesday and Thursday 7:30 a.m- 5:00 p.m on Friday. Hours during summer time and semester breaks are determined by needs.

Is there computer access the entire time?

Students have acess to the computer from 8:00 a.m until the library closes.

Is food and drink permitted in the library?

No

How do I get a library card?

Your ID as a St. John’s College student is your library card.

For how long can I check out books?

Ordinarily, a book can be checked out for four weeks. All books are to be returned by the end of the semester.  Books that are in high demand only have one week cirrculation.

How many books can I take at a time?

You can take out as many books as you like at any one time, permitted the book is not in high demand.

What if I am late returning a book?

The overdue fine is $0.05 a day with one day of grace. This fee accumulates over weekends and vacation times. Books not returned by a posted date at the end of each semester will have a fine of $0.25 a day from the original date due.

What if I loose a book?

You will be charged the price to replace the book plus a $2.00 processing fee. Books not returned or fines not paid will result in report cards being held and registration denied for the coming year.  If a student has a book over due she/he is not allowed to barrow any books until the book is returned.

Does the library have a color copier?

No

Does the library have a color printer?

No

How much does it cost to print a document?

The cost for printing a document is $0.25 a page, however printing credits need to purchased from the book store.

How much does it cost to make photocopies?

Photocopies cost $0.25 a page.

Does the library have a study room for small group study?

Not at the present time.

Does the library have any fiction works?

Yes, there is a rather extensive fiction collection.

Is the library set up for wireless?

Not at present.

Can I bring my laptop to the library?

Yes, but not in the computer lab.

How do I gain access to the computer lab?

In order to gain access to the Library's Computer Lab students must go to IT department  to get a Computer Access Code.
