Building Project in Collaboration with Hand in Hand Ministries
The Hunter Commission engaged the St. John’s College high school boys and teachers in a building project in collaboration with Hand in Hand Ministries. The building project is a program of Hand in Hand Ministries which identifies families in need of a house. This organization then proceeds to engage it benefactors in raising the funds needed for the building as well as allowing them to do the actual labour.
This is what the high school was engaged in. The high school helped in identifying the needy family which in this case was a student of the high school and his mother who were desperately in need of a home. The high school raised the funds necessary for the building and on a weekend proceeded to actually build the house.
After a blessing by Fr. Timothy Thompson, S.J., the Headmaster and the boys turned over the keys to the house to a very grateful mother and her son.
After the success of the project and seeing the positive impact that it had on the boys, the Headmaster has committed to having this activity be an annual event.
Other Projects
The Hunter Commission assisted St. Ignatius Primary School in refurbishing its computer lab. The principal has expressed her gratitude for the assistance given in allowing the school to once again begin to offer computer classes to its children.
The Hunter Commission also helped Delille Academy in purchasing sewing machines which it needed for its sewing program.
In addition, the Hunter Commission, along with other resource centers of St. John’s College, collaborated in the collection of food and money from students and employees. This was to assist with relief efforts during the severe floods of October and November of 2008. Some of the items were given directly to flood victims in visits by students and faculty of the School of Liberal Arts while the remainder was turned over to the Belize Red Cross for distribution.
