The Jesuit Scholarship program was established in 1986 and has as its purpose:
- To assist SJC graduates to pursue Bachelor’s degrees in fields that contribute to the development of Belize
- To support SJC graduates who will make a positive contribution to the development of Belize
- To recognize SJC graduates who embrace the Ignatian philosophy of cura personalis (care for the whole person), free inquiry, the highest of intellectual standards, service to others and a life of purpose
The Jesuit Scholarship program is a partnership between St. John’s College and members of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in the United States. While each of these 28 Jesuit colleges and universities offers some level of assistance to international students, the Jesuit Scholarship Program works with specific partners to offer tuition awards to graduates of St. John’s College Junior College.
100% TUITION AWARDS
Some partner colleges and universities offer 100% tuition awards. Eligible for these awards are SJC Junior College students who:
- have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 at the time of application
- are Belizean citizens
- expect to earn Associate Degrees by June 2010 or have already earned Associate Degrees after June 2009
- have demonstrated leadership potential and commitment to the community
- can access financial resources to meet non-tuition expenses
Students who have US citizenship, residency, or immigrant status are NOT eligible for 100% tuition awards.
Partners who have confirmed that they will offer 100% tuition awards for the two-year period 2010-2012 are:
- Loyola University Maryland
- Spring Hill College
- Rockhurst University
- College of the Holy Cross
Confirmations are hoped for and anticipated from:
- Gonzaga University
- St. Louis University
To apply for a 100% tuition award:
- Download Jesuit Scholarship application form from the SJC Career Services website at www.sjc.edu.bz/careerservices
- Submit completed application form to the Office of the Provost with personal development record, birth certificate, letters of recommendation, financial statements, and ACT or SAT exam scores. The scholarship application packet must include all required components to be considered complete. DEADLINE: January 15, 2010 - 4:00 p.m.
- If shortlisted, participate in interview
- If nominated for award, sign acceptance agreement and apply to designated school.
50% TUITION AWARDS
Some partner colleges offer 50% tuition awards. Confirmed for 2010 are:
- Spring Hill College
- Loyola University New Orleans
To be eligible, applicants must
- Plan to earn an SJC Associate Degree by June 2010
- Have a cumulative GPA to date of at least 2.50
- Have access to the financial resources to cover expenses
Persons with citizenship, residency, or immigrant status in the USA are eligible for this award.
The application process for 50% tuition awards is:
1. Apply directly to the university
2. Submit to the Office of the Provost:
- an original letter of acceptance from the university
- a letter of nomination from a teacher
- a letter to the Provost requesting consideration for nomination. PRIORITY DEADLINE = March 16, 2010 by 4:00 p.m.
- proof of ability to cover additional expenses
REGIS UNIVERSITY SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIPS
Regis University offers one scholarship for tuition only in each of the following areas: Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics
To be eligible, candidates must:
- Be enrolled in the Natural Science and Math Program at the Junior College and
expect to earn Associate Degrees by June 2010 or have earned an Associate Degree in Science with a concentration in Mathematics or Natural Science within the last academic year
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00
- Be Belizean citizens
- Be able to access financial resources to meet non-tuition expenses
Students who have US citizenship, residency, or immigrant status are NOT eligible for the Regis Science Scholarship.
To apply for a Regis Science Scholarship:
- Apply directly to Regis University by the end of November, 2009
- Submit scholarship application form along with copy of letter of acceptance from Regis University along with birth certificate and recommendation to the Office of the Provost by January 15, 2010 at 4:00 p.m.
- Sit the Regis Scholarship Exam in the subject area for which acceptance to Regis has been gained.
The scholarship winners will be required to sign acceptance agreements and present financial declarations.
