Belize Open Scholarship Award 2010

The Government of Belize is inviting students to apply for the Belize Scholarship Award for 2010. The qualifying examination for the award of the scholarship is the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE).
 
Academic Requirement
 
The Belize Scholarship will be awarded to the Belizean student who achieves the best results with:
 
1.      Grades I or II in six CAPE units comprising at least two "two-unit" courses, Communication Studies and Caribbean Studies taken within two (2) years of initial enrollment in an Associate Degree program at a tertiary level institution.
 
The award will be as provided under the Belize Scholarship Act Chapter 34 of the Subsidiary Laws of Belize RE 2003. The recipient of the award, however, must have his/her proposed course of study and his/her university of choice approved by the Ministry of Education.
 
The recipient of the award will be required to return to Belize whenever he/she successfully completes his/her course of study. Thereupon, he/she will practice his/her profession for a period representing two years of service for the first year of the scholarship period, and one year of service for each subsequent year. The maximum period of service is seven years.
 
Conditions of Entry-
 
  1. Every Candidate shall –
 
Be not more than twenty-four on the first day of October in his/her year of candidature;
Be a citizen of Belize;
Have been born in Belize or, if not born in Belize, have been born of parents one of whom-
i.        Was domiciled in Belize at the time of the birth of such candidate; or
ii.      Has resided in Belize for at least ten years ending with the month prior to that in which the examination is held; or
iii.    Has died in Belize:
 
Provided that in such case the candidate him/herself has resided in Belize for at least ten years next preceding the thirty-first day of July in his/her year of candidature;
 
Have resided in Belize for at least five years next preceding the thirty-first day of July in his/her year of candidature;
 
Be of good personal character, vouched for to the satisfaction of the Ministry of Education; and
 
Not later than the last date of entry to the qualifying examination in his/her year of candidature, notify the Chief Education Officer (in such form as he/she may describe) that he/she is a candidate for the scholarship in the next year.
 
            2.         For the purpose of subparagraph (d) of paragraph (1) of this
Regulation, a candidate who, during the five years next preceding the thirty-first day of July in his year of candidature, has resided or is residing in a territory outside Belize for the purpose of receiving his education in that territory shall be deemed to have been resident in Belize.
 
            3.         A person may be candidate on more than one occasion so
long as he/she fulfills all the requirements of these Regulations.
 
            4.         Every candidate shall comply with the requirements of the
Chief Education Officer as to fees, forms, date of entrance and all other matters relating to his/her qualifying examinations.
 
Candidates must obtain and submit application forms through the Dean of their particular Junior College Institution. The Ministry of Education will only accept completed applications with the required documents.
 
Completed applications must reach the Chief Education Officer, Ministry of Education, West Block, Belmopan, no later than Friday, 27th May, 2010.
