This significant occasion was commemorated with a special Anniversary Mass, a gathering that not only highlighted the rich history of SJC but also served to honor the sacred Profession of Final Vows by Rev. Jeremy K. Zipple, S.J. The atmosphere was filled with reverence and joy as members of the community came together to witness this profound spiritual commitment, celebrating Fr. Jeremy's dedication to his vocation and the Jesuit mission. In addition to this momentous celebration, we were privileged to host the 2025 Higher Education Leadership Gathering (HELG) Conference, a prestigious event for the United States Central & Southern Province. - SJC University Kicks Off First Global Perspective Symposium
St. John’s College University proudly hosted its inaugural Global Perspective Symposium on Thursday, Feb 6, an event designed to immerse students in the pressing, real-world challenges posed by climate change and the critical need for effective conservation strategies. The symposium aimed to foster a deeper understanding of these issues among the student body and to encourage proactive engagement in environmental stewardship. The highlight of the event was a compelling presentation by esteemed guest speaker Mr. Eli Romero, who serves as the Climate Change Manager. He was accompanied by a dedicated colleague from the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT), an organization renowned for its commitment to preserving vital ecosystems and biodiversity. During their presentations, Mr. Romero and his colleague shared powerful insights that extended beyond mere statistics and environmental warnings; they illuminated the complex interplay of factors that influence climate change and the multifaceted approaches required to address them. Their discussion delved into the intricacies of managing conservation efforts, emphasizing the hard work, unwavering dedication, and strategic planning that underpin the successful operation of organizations like PACT. They highlighted the necessity of collaboration among various stakeholders, including government agencies, local communities, and international bodies, to create a unified front against environmental degradation. The themes discussed during the symposium resonate deeply with the principles articulated in Pope Francis' encyclical, Laudato Si' . This document emphasizes the urgent need for a collective response to environmental crises, advocating for an integral ecology that recognizes the interdependence of all creation. It calls for a shift in mindset, urging individuals and communities to embrace sustainable practices and to take responsibility for the stewardship of the Earth. Interconnectedness: Similar to the discussions at the symposium, Laudato Si' highlights the interconnectedness of social, economic, and environmental issues, urging a holistic approach to problem-solving. Call to Action: The encyclical serves as a clarion call for action, much like the symposium, inspiring individuals to engage in advocacy and community initiatives that promote sustainability. Community Engagement: Both the symposium and Laudato Si' stress the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders, including local communities, to address climate change effectively. Students were not only educated about the dire environmental issues facing our planet but were also inspired by the stories of resilience and innovation from the field. Mr. Romero shared case studies that illustrated the tangible impacts of conservation efforts, showcasing how grassroots initiatives can lead to significant ecological improvements. This narrative empowered students to recognize the value of their contributions, no matter how small, in the larger context of global environmental efforts. As the symposium progressed, it became clear that this event was not merely a discussion forum; it served as a clarion call for action. Students left the session with a newfound appreciation for the behind-the-scenes efforts that are often invisible in the broader conversation about conservation. They felt a growing sense of responsibility to take action in their own lives, whether through a dvocacy, community service, or personal lifestyle changes that support sustainability. The symposium inspired a collective commitment among attendees to not only engage in dialogue about climate change but to actively participate in the solutions. In conclusion, the Global Perspective Symposium at St. John’s College University marked a significant step in cultivating a generation of environmentally conscious leaders. It provided a platform for critical conversations about climate change and conservation, while also empowering students to be proactive agents of change in their communities. The event underscored the importance of education and awareness in driving the conservation movement forward, reinforcing the idea that every individual has a role to play in the fight against climate change. This symposium was indeed a momentous occasion, igniting passion and purpose among the student body and reminding us all that the future of our planet depends on our collective efforts today.

- Culture & Change Class Explores Belizean History at the National Heritage Library
Students viewing historical photos at the National Library. This week, students of the Culture & Change class at SJCU embarked on an enriching educational journey to the National Heritage Library in Belmopan. The visit was designed to offer a hands-on learning experience that complements their classroom studies on the cultural, political, and economic transformations that have shaped Belize over the years. At the library, students delved into a treasure trove of historical media, including old newspaper articles, photographs, and other archival materials that document the nation's dynamic history. The opportunity to engage directly with these primary sources allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of how societal changes unfold and are recorded over time. The field trip also served a dual purpose, as it provided practical preparation for an upcoming class project. Students are working on a digital album assignment that will showcase curated images and narratives reflecting Belize’s evolving identity. The visit equipped them with the skills to handle and analyze archival materials, ensuring their work reflects both accuracy and respect for the nation’s historical artifacts. Lecturer Linette Sabido, who organized the trip, emphasized the importance of experiential learning: “By stepping outside the classroom and immersing themselves in historical resources, students can better appreciate the richness of Belize’s heritage. This experience not only enhances their academic understanding but also instills a sense of pride and responsibility in preserving our history.” The visit to the National Heritage Library is a testament to SJCU’s commitment to innovative and impactful education. Through initiatives like these, the university continues to inspire its students to connect with their roots, critically analyze societal changes, and contribute meaningfully to the ongoing narrative of Belize.

- SJCJC-U Students Embark on Pilgrimage and Cultural Immersion in El Salvador
SJCJC-U students and faculty attending mass in El Salvador. This week, a delegation of students from St. John's College Junior College University (SJCJC-U) has been in El Salvador, participating in a meaningful pilgrimage and cultural immersion experience with our sister Jesuit institution, Universidad Centroamericana (UCA). This trip marks a significant occasion, as Jesuit students from across Central America have gathered to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the tragic deaths of the six Jesuits, their housemaid, and her child, who were killed in 1989 at the UCA during El Salvador's civil conflict. The pilgrimage and cultural exchange have provided the students with a deep and moving experience, connecting them with the rich history and spirit of solidarity that defines the Jesuit community. Among the key activities, the delegation visited the tomb and residence of St. Oscar Romero, the Archbishop of San Salvador, whose martyrdom in 1980 was a defining moment in the country’s history. They also took time to learn about the UCA Jesuit martyrs, whose sacrifice in 1989 remains a powerful symbol of courage and commitment to justice in the face of violence. The students have also explored historical sites in the region, deepening their understanding of El Salvador's complex history and the struggles for peace and justice that have shaped its modern identity. These visits are not only educational but also personal, as they invite reflection on the meaning of martyrdom, human rights, and the ongoing fight for justice in Central America. A key highlight of the trip has been the fellowship and cultural exchange with UCA students and peers from across the region. These opportunities for connection have allowed the SJCJC-U students to engage in meaningful dialogue, share experiences, and strengthen bonds of solidarity with fellow young people committed to the values of the Jesuit tradition. The group also participated in a Mass and procession held in honor of the Jesuit martyrs, a deeply spiritual moment that united the delegation with the broader Jesuit community in a shared remembrance of those who gave their lives for justice and peace.
