  • SJC Engineers Visits BSI and Medina's Construction Site

    On 7 April 2025, our Engineering majors took learning to the next level, embarking on an educational journey that would not only enhance their academic knowledge but also provide them with real-world experiences that are crucial for their future careers! The first stop on their itinerary was Belize Sugar Industries (BSI), a leading player in the sugar production sector. Here, students delved into the intricate world of Industrial Engineering, gaining valuable insights into large-scale manufacturing processes. They had the opportunity to observe firsthand the various stages of sugar production, from the initial harvesting of sugarcane to the intricate processes involved in refining and packaging the final product. This exposure allowed them to understand the complexities of systems optimization, where they learned how engineers work to enhance efficiency and reduce waste throughout the manufacturing cycle. Additionally, they were introduced to engineering management practices that ensure smooth operations, highlighting the importance of teamwork and communication in a large industrial setting. The journey continued at Medina’s Construction Site, a bustling hub of activity where students witnessed Civil Engineering in action. Here, they observed the entire spectrum of civil engineering processes, starting from meticulous site planning that involves assessing the geographical and environmental factors, to the structural development that includes the actual construction of buildings and infrastructure. The students were able to engage with experienced civil engineers who shared insights into the practical challenges faced on the ground, such as managing timelines, ensuring safety regulations are met, and adapting to unforeseen circumstances that can arise during construction. This hands-on experience not only reinforced their theoretical knowledge but also sparked discussions about innovative solutions and sustainable practices in civil engineering, preparing them to think critically and creatively about the field.

    On Monday 7 April 2025, our dedicated Science majors of the High School division embarked on an extraordinary and flavorful journey that promised to be both educational and delicious! In the picturesque region of Toledo, they had the unique opportunity to explore a renowned chocolate farm and factory, immersing themselves in the intricate world of cacao cultivation. During their visit, students delved into the biology of cacao plants, examining the various factors that influence growth, such as climate, soil quality, and agricultural practices. They learned about the fascinating fermentation processes that cacao beans undergo, which are crucial for developing the rich flavors that chocolate lovers cherish. Additionally, the students engaged with the chemistry behind chocolate production, discovering how different methods of processing—from bean to bar—can significantly alter the final product's taste and texture. This hands-on experience allowed them to appreciate the scientific principles that underpin one of the world's most beloved treats. As the adventure continued, the students traveled to Stann Creek, where they visited the famous Marie Sharp Factory. Here, they witnessed food science in action, observing the meticulous production of Belize’s world-renowned pepper sauces. The students were captivated by the intricate processes involved in creating these flavorful condiments, from the selection of fresh ingredients to the bottling of the final product. They learned about the importance of quality control in food production, as well as the various methods of food preservation that ensure the sauces maintain their vibrant flavors and safety for consumers. Furthermore, they discussed product innovation and how culinary creativity can lead to new flavor combinations and market trends. This visit not only enhanced their understanding of food science but also inspired them to think critically about the role of science in everyday culinary practices.

  • Fortis Hydro Dam and Nexgen welcomes High School Wildcats!

    On 7th April 2025, our Computer Science majors embarked on an enlightening and educational field trip to two major tech-driven sites, which provided them with invaluable insights into the practical applications of their studies. This excursion was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world technology, allowing students to witness firsthand the integration of computer science in various industries. Their first stop was the impressive Fortis Hydro Dam, a remarkable facility that plays a crucial role in the energy sector. During their visit, students had the opportunity to explore how advanced computer systems are utilized to support energy production processes. They learned about the intricate control mechanisms that manage the flow of water and optimize energy output, ensuring that the dam operates efficiently and sustainably. In addition, the students were introduced to the sophisticated data monitoring systems in place. These systems are essential for tracking energy production levels, assessing environmental impacts, and maintaining safety protocols. The tour included discussions with engineers and technicians who explained the importance of renewable energy sources and how technology is pivotal in achieving sustainability goals. Following their enlightening experience at the hydro dam, the group proceeded to visit Nexgen, one of Belize’s tech companies. At Nexgen, students received a comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at the various cybersecurity protocols that protect sensitive information and ensure the integrity of communications. They were introduced to the company’s robust network infrastructure, which supports a wide range of services including broadband internet and cloud solutions. The visit included interactive demonstrations of the technologies employed to safeguard networks against cyber threats, highlighting the critical role that cybersecurity plays in today’s interconnected world. Additionally, the students engaged in discussions about the innovation driving Belize’s digital connectivity, including the development of new technologies and services that aim to enhance the user experience and expand access to digital resources across the nation. Overall, this field trip not only enhanced the students' understanding of computer science applications but also inspired them to think critically about the future of technology in energy and telecommunications. The experiences gained during this outing are sure to resonate with them as they continue their academic journeys and prepare for careers in the ever-evolving tech landscape.

  • SJC journeys to Benque Viejo del Carmen for a day of Cultural Immersion and Creative Exploration!

    On April 7, 2025, our dedicated Humanities majors from the High School embarked on an enriching journey to the picturesque town of Benque Viejo del Carmen, where they engaged in a day filled with cultural immersion and creative exploration that promised to broaden their understanding of the rich tapestry of Belizean culture! Their first stop on this enlightening excursion was the renowned Poustinia Land Art Park, a unique and inspiring site that serves as a testament to the powerful intersection of nature and artistic expression. Here, students were not merely passive observers; they actively engaged with various art installations that beautifully reflect the diverse environment and cultural heritage of Belize. The park features an array of artworks created by both local and international artists, each piece inviting contemplation and interaction. As they wandered through the lush landscapes, students discussed the significance of land art in promoting environmental awareness and the ways in which these installations serve as a dialogue between the natural world and human creativity. Following their immersive experience at the art park, the students made their way to Stonetree Records, a hub of Belize's vibrant music scene. Here, they gained invaluable insight into the intricate relationship between music and cultural preservation. The visit included a fascinating discussion about the history of Belizean music, its roots in various cultural traditions, and how contemporary artists are keeping these traditions alive while also innovating new sounds. Students had the opportunity to hear live demonstrations and even participate in a brief workshop, where they learned about the recording process and the importance of sound in storytelling and cultural expression. This experience highlighted the role of music as a powerful medium for cultural identity and community cohesion. The final stop on their journey was at Cubola Productions, a local publishing house renowned for its commitment to storytelling and literature. Here, students delved into the world of local publishing and learned about the critical role that literature plays in shaping national identity and preserving cultural narratives. They explored the process of bringing a story to life, from writing and editing to publishing and distribution. The discussion emphasized the importance of literature in reflecting the diverse voices of Belize and how these stories contribute to a greater understanding of the nation’s history and values. Students left Cubola Productions not only with a deeper appreciation for the written word but also inspired to consider their own roles as storytellers in their communities.

    On Saturday April 5, 2025, the St. John Vianney Parish Hall received a heartwarming facelift in celebration of Good Deeds Day—and SJC was proud to be part of the transformation! A special thank you to Mrs. Charlotte Nal and her foundation, Ixchel Caribe, for leading this generous initiative. In collaboration with the SJC Campus Ministry, Miss Belize, the Special Envoy, Belize City Council, Vargas Foods, and a committed group of family and friends, this effort reminds us of the power of service and community. We are especially proud of our Campus Ministry team and SJC volunteers who showed up in full spirit, living out our mission of faith in action and men and women for others. May God continue to bless this mission of love and kindness. Thank you for making SJC part of this beautiful day of giving!

    On Tuesday, April 1st, SJCJC-U proudly hosted its highly anticipated annual Student Council Speech Rally for the upcoming 2025–2026 elections! This event has become a cherished tradition within our institution, serving not only as a platform for candidates to express their aspirations but also as a celebration of student engagement and democratic participation. This year, a remarkable total of sixteen bold and brilliant candidates took the stage, each one eager to share their unique vision, deep passion, and unwavering commitment to serve the diverse and vibrant student body that makes up our community. From innovative ideas that promise to enhance student life to heartfelt pledges aimed at fostering inclusivity and support, it’s abundantly clear that our future leaders are not only ready but also enthusiastic about making a significant impact in the lives of their peers! This rally also marked a bittersweet moment in our school's history, as we listened to the poignant farewell speeches of the outgoing Student Council—a dedicated team that has led with exceptional integrity, remarkable resilience, and an unwavering dedication to improving student life throughout their term.     Our students at the Junior College brought science to life at this semester’s Chemistry Fair! After weeks of trials and testing since Week 9, they finally got to showcase how classroom concepts translate into real-world applications. From soap and lotion making to DNA face masks, fragrances, and even biodiesel production – the creativity was off the charts! One judge shared, “It was so fun to see how the students made chemistry enjoyable while clearly knowing their stuff!” We're proud of our young scientists for proving that chemistry isn’t just about formulas – it’s about fun, innovation, and curiosity! 👩‍🔬🧪👨‍🔬

  • House Cup Games 2025 – A Spectacular Finale to Spirit Month!

    On March 28, the energy was at an all-time high as the Great Houses of Locke, Zinkle, Weber, and Thompson battled it out in the highly anticipated House Cup Games! Students and faculty came together to compete in track events, cornhole, chess tournaments, and more, racking up points for their houses in a thrilling display of skill, teamwork, and school spirit. This record-breaking event was the most attended of the school year, with an electric atmosphere from start to finish. After an intense competition, Thompson House emerged victorious, reclaiming the title from last year’s champions, Zinkle! A huge shoutout to everyone who participated, cheered, and made this event unforgettable. Until next year—who will take the House Cup next?

Their hard work, dedication, and passion for the sport have brought home incredible achievements: Nyasha Harris – 1st (100m) | 2nd (200m) | 2nd (4x400m) | 3rd (4x100m) Jada Logan – 2nd (4x400m) | 3rd (4x100m) | 4th (Long Jump) Angel Pech – 1st (4x400m Mixed Relay) | 2nd (4x400m Open Relay) We are beyond proud of their outstanding performances and the way they represented our country on the international stage!

  • A Journey of Faith Through Art: Samir Habet's Stations of the Cross

    This Lenten season, St. John’s College Junior College (SJCJC) undertook a remarkable initiative that transformed the act of reflection into a captivating form of art. In an inspiring collaboration with former student and talented artist Samir Habet, the Campus Ministry Department proudly unveiled a breathtaking series of hand-painted murals that vividly depict the 14 Stations of the Cross. Each mural serves not only as a visual representation of Christ’s journey but also as a powerful reminder of the themes of sacrifice, redemption, and hope that are central to the Lenten season. For Habet, the creative process involved in this project was much more than merely applying paint to canvas; it was a deeply personal act of meditation and spiritual exploration. As he meticulously crafted each mural, he immersed himself in the stories and emotions associated with each station, allowing himself to connect with the trials and tribulations faced by Christ. This journey of creation became a form of prayer for him, a way to express his faith and reflect on the significance of the events that the Stations of the Cross represent. The result of this artistic endeavor is a stunning display of faith which, invited students, faculty, and visitors alike to pause and reflect on the meaning of the Lenten season.     Our enthusiastic group of 2nd-year Tourism majors recently embarked on an unforgettable Nocturnal Zoo Tour, immersing themselves in the captivating world of Belize’s incredible wildlife after dark! This unique experience was not just a simple outing; it was an educational adventure that allowed students to witness the vibrant ecosystem of Belize in a whole new light. Under the guidance of knowledgeable and passionate experts, the interactive tour provided students with the opportunity to engage directly with Belize’s fascinating nocturnal creatures, such as the elusive jaguar, the playful kinkajou, and the mesmerizing owls that soar silently through the night. The students were filled with excitement and anticipation, ready to deepen their understanding of the country’s rich biodiversity. The tour was carefully designed to highlight the unique adaptations and behaviors of these nocturnal animals, showcasing how they thrive in the lush environments of Belize. Students learned about the vital roles these creatures play in their ecosystems. Throughout the evening, the students were encouraged to ask questions and participate in discussions, fostering a deeper appreciation for wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting these remarkable species and their habitats. The guides shared intriguing facts and stories about each animal encountered, enriching the experience and sparking curiosity among the students. This immersive night tour not only enhanced their academic knowledge but also provided lasting memories and a profound connection to Belize's natural heritage. The blend of education and adventure made it an experience they won’t soon forget, inspiring many to consider future careers in wildlife conservation, ecotourism, or environmental education. The Nocturnal Zoo Tour was truly a highlight of their academic journey, leaving them with a deeper respect for nature and a commitment to preserving its wonders for generations to come!
